The Hartford Migrant team had 4 great days of learning at the National Migrant Conference (NASDME) in Portland, Oregon last week. Some highlights of the conference were hearing the inspiring speeches from the Al Lee Wright scholarship recipients, cultural performances, and workshops on a variety of topics including multilingual learners, parent engagement, and recruitment of migratory youth. One of the best sessions I attended was from a migrant team in Washington State who shared about their parent leadership team and strategies they implemented to reach and engage more families. One strategy that they used to increase their parent engagement was to host events that catered to the whole family (mothers/fathers/caretakers, siblings, etc) such as crafts, games or cooking. Another strategy that they implemented was that they had students give brief presentations about what they were learning in school or about different school programs and organizations at the beginning of their events. This gave opportunities to students to be leaders in the school community and the families wanted to come support their children who were presenting.

National Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10, 2024. The Michigan Department of Education’s (MDE) Office of Educator Excellence (OEE) wishes to celebrate teachers across Michigan for the entire month of May.
MDE invites parents to submit 15-30 second videos of their students recognizing and thanking a specific teacher for their impact. Nothing fancy is required—cell phones can capture the videos. Please follow the directions on the flyer. Videos and parental consent may be submitted via the Teacher Appreciation Video Project Google Form. Videos are currently being accepted until Friday, April 19, 2024.
Submitted videos may be posted on the Teacher Appreciation Month webpage and the MDE’s YouTube channel. The Office of Educator Excellence Facebook (@MIeducator) and X (formerly Twitter) social media pages will be promoting the videos throughout the month of May.
If you have a child with great things to say about a teacher, don’t hesitate—use the instructions found on our website to submit a video today!
